Custom Manipulator Arm for Lifting Crucibles of Molten Copper

Problem: This customer works with large, 60 pound crucibles containing molten copper. Handling the hot and delicate materials can be risky, and traditional methods of manual lifting or using basic tools do not always provide the necessary control or stability, leading to accidents or spillage. They were looking for a more efficient and secure method of transferring the hot crucibles.

Solution: Ergonomic Partners developed a custom lifting solution that features a pneumatic manipulator arm with a custom end effector that allows it to grip the hot crucibles without damaging its components. The manipulator arm and end effector both have a powder-coated steel frame, but what is unique are the tools' stainless steel grip jaws, high-temperature hoses, and a heat shield that protects the cylinders and hoses from temperatures up to 1,500°F.

The system is operated using the ergonomic handlebars that feature proportional up and down controls, parking brake controls, and grip, release, and common button. The end effector offers 360-degrees of non-continuous rotation with a friction brake. The arm offers 360-degrees of non-continuous rotation with a pneumatic brake at the mast and 330-degrees of rotation with a pneumatic brake at the primary arm, as well as vertical limit stops.

Result: The customer now has a lifting device that gives them more control and accuracy when handling the molten copper, which creates a safer work environment while also increasing production.

Whether you work in a laboratory, foundry, or any industry that deals with high-temperature materials, Ergonomic Partners can help improve your operations and enhance overall safety.
